Thinking of Traveling to Europe, Consider Iceland
Published Wednesday, December 30th 2015Iceland is a must visit country, with black sand beaches, roaring waterfalls, snow-capped volcanoes and steaming geysers. There is something for visitors year round. Iceland offers long summer days with temperate weather, northern lights and exhilarating winter sports in cold weather. Just under a six hour flight from the US, Iceland is an unforgettable European natural wonderland.
Visit Vatnshellir, an 8,000 year old lava tube for your own version of traveling to the center of the earth. A circular staircase goes nearly 115 feet underground, and there you will be exposed to lava stalagmites and stalactites and see where a river of fire once flowed.
Iceland has no shortage of waterfalls. Visit Godafoss, Skogafoss, Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss. Make sure not to miss Dettifoss, 147 feet high and with a span of almost 330 feet, it is considered the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
Challenge yourself to partake of Iceland’s notorious fish dish, hakari. It is fermented rotten shark meat. It’s served with a shot of Brennivin, a licorice flavored adult beverage. Be brave, and remember, you can eradicate the taste of those small cubes of hakari with licorice, of a sort.
Visit glaciers by boating past icebergs, and if your trip is timed just right, you can witness the glacier calving or watch a new iceberg emerge from the depths.
Visit a local farm for an unforgettable stop on your itinerary. You can help herd sheep or ride a horse. Iceland has plenty of farms open to visitors, giving you a chance to meet with locals and learn how they spend their days. Visit in September for rettir, herding sheep and horses to the farms from grazing grounds in the highlands.
Immerse yourself in the culture and natural environment of Iceland. The memories you create will fill your heart for a lifetime.
